The concept of charging your phone—or any other technological device, for that matter—should be fairly simple. You just connect your phone and plug to a wall outlet and let it do its thing. However, there are a lot of myths and misrepresented facts circulating the Internet lately regarding how charging your phone actually works as well as what you should do and what you should avoid. Here are the top four phone charging myths you need to know so that you can make more informed decisions.

Myth 1: GPS Is Draining Your Battery Life
GPS capabilities obviously consume a portion of your battery life depending on how much you use them and whether you leave them on in the background. Nonetheless, the reality of just how much of your battery life gets used is generally widely exaggerated. These applications typically don’t use much more of your battery life than your other applications do, so you shouldn’t be afraid to use them. The only thing you should be wary of is how much of your monthly data is being used.
Myth 2: Never Turn off Your Phone
These days, most people tend to think of their phones as extensions of themselves. If that’s the case, then you need to realize that, like yourself, your phone could use a break every once in a while. It may be unrealistic to ask people to turn their phones off for more than a few minutes at a time (unless you’re in a movie theater, at which point it’s only respectful to others to do so!), but rebooting it once a week could actually help improve its overall performance and even preserve its battery life even longer.
Myth 3: Avoid Off-Brand Chargers at All Costs
Contrary to popular belief, off-brand chargers aren’t the enemy here: counterfeit chargers are. And yes, there’s a difference. Off-brand chargers that are produced by reputable technological companies are generally perfectly safe to use with any phone model. Counterfeit chargers that are typically manufactured in illicit facilities using cheap materials can actually be fire and safety hazards, so it’s important to do your research and know which products are legitimate and which ones aren’t. Portable chargers made by Ohming Technology, for instance, are high-quality and compatible with all older and modern devices.
Myth 4: Using Your Phone while Charging Is Dangerous
This myth is only partially true. Cheap, imitation, or knock-off chargers can pose a threat to your health and safety as they’ve been known to explode or catch fire when used while charging. Case in point: the Chinese flight attendant whose device unexpectedly exploded near her face while she was simultaneously having a phone conversation and charging it. This story went viral almost immediately back in 2013 for all the wrong reasons. Unfortunately, one seemingly minor but very important detail was conveniently omitted or forgotten altogether. The plug the flight attendant was using at the time wasn’t the original USB phone charger that came with the device in question—it was a cheaply made knock-off.
