In working environments, using multiple electronic devices is a part of everyday life, making the need for a USB powered hub a necessity. Typically, PC users settle for a USB powered hub that draws their energy from the USB port itself. This, however, is not the most effective means of powering your device. A USB powered hub has added performance and safety benefits to charging your device.
Standard vs. Powered USB Hub
Standard USB hubs, referred to as bus-powered hubs, are common because they don’t require any external power connection to charge your devices. Instead, they use whatever power is supplied through the actual USB port connected to your PC. While this may be okay for devices that don’t take a lot of power, other devices often don’t receive the charge they need.
Powered USB hubs are connected to external power adapters. This means they do not use any power from your USB port which allows the hub to better charge devices that need more current. A USB powered hub also provides the 500mA of power needed to stabilize each device plugged into the hub rather than distributing the current.
More Benefits of a Powered Hub
In addition to offering more charge power, here are three more benefits of a powered USB hub:
Operating multiple devices
Being able to generate its own power means powered hubs can better sustain multiple devices and do so without negatively impacting your computer’s performance. For users who are using multiple devices, this is a huge benefit because attaching these devices with a standard bus port can slow your computer down significantly.
Preferred choice for PC manufacturers
Since many of the newer USB devices aren’t properly supported with bus hubs, PC manufacturers suggest that users stick with powered hubs. This is particularly true for Mac computers.
Over-current protection
Powered USB hubs are able to cut off power to a device after it has reached a particular limit. This offers better protection for your devices as they do not receive any excess charge.
Ohming Technology prefers USB powered hubs and has developed the Charge M.E. USB 3.0 Hub. In addition to four USB 3.0 ports, this device has four dedicated power ports, which means power is not being shared. Instead each charging port provides up to 2.4 amps of its own power regardless of whether a device is plugged in or out during charge.
The Charge M.E. USB 3.0 is also compatible with both legacy and current devices. In the present reality of on-the-go work, where many employees or contractors need to be plugged in and connected for most of the day, this product helps keep those expectations possible. Ohming Technology is confident there is currently no other product on the market like the Powered USB 3.0.
