It’s incredible how far the technology in mobile phone has advanced. Just looking at the last decade, we have had Androids and iPhones, in particular, transform from simple cellphones used for phone calls and text messaging to mini computers that can be used to do just about anything we can imagine.
Though a bit slower, we’ve finally seen some improvement in battery life as well. Phones are able to stay charged longer, allowing users to do more for longer periods of time. And considering it’s possible to access work files, create documents, browse, shop, and order food all on our smartphones, battery life is actually an important element.
Charging Your mobile phone with USB Power
Using a USB to charge smartphones has become a norm for the on-the-go lifestyle many of us lead today. It’s convenient and, in most instances, an effective means of keeping our cellphones charged. There are some rules to this, however, and some facts that should be known.
First, it is safe to plug your device into pretty much any USB port without worrying too much about it being negatively affected. Even if you plug your mobile phone into a 2100A tablet charger, your phone is not in any danger of exploding. In fact, in these instances, your phone may even charge at a faster rate.
The next thing to know is that not all USBs carry the same power. Some will charge your phone quickly while others may not charge your mobile phone very fast at all. It is a better idea to try and always use the charger that came with your cellphone. If that’s not possible, use a high-quality USB charger; that way, at least the chances of anything happening to your device will be reduced.
Is It Safe to Charge Overnight?
Do you or do you not leave your mobile phone to charge overnight? This is another age-old question that has become prominent since cellphones came into being. All of us have probably done it on several occasions, but are we causing any permanent damage to our devices?
The answer to this question is “not really.” If you’re concerned that leaving your phone charging overnight will impact how it charges going forward, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Smartphones are called “smart” for a reason: they know when to stop the current from entering your device.
The issue isn’t actually charging your mobile phone too much, it’s overheating it. Lithium batteries are sensitive to overheating, which can cause your phone to act oddly. One tip is to make sure your phone case is removed before leaving your phone to charge overnight.
Another point to keep in mind is that your phone is best kept 50% to 80% charged. This is most effectively achieved by short charges throughout the day. That also means you should avoid letting your phone battery drain all the way down to near zero before recharging.
Phone batteries have a limited number of what is called a charge cycle—charging your phone from almost dead to completely charged uses up one of these charge cycles. Each phone battery can sustain a certain amount, but this amount is not infinite.
