How Amperage Impacts Battery Charge

Amperage and Mobile Battery ChargingThis is a fairly technical question, so we’ll do our best to keep it as simple as possible. Before even getting to the voltage, the first thing to note is that the type of charger you use does matter. You may ask yourself, “Can I use a charger with higher amperage?” or, “Can I use a charger with higher voltage?” The best answer is to use the charger that comes with the device.

Of course, this is not always possible or convenient. Unless you walk around with your charger, you’ll need to use other means of charging your device. So, it’s important to know just what kind of charger you can use and how amperage impacts your mobile device.

Amperage and Mobile Battery Charging

To understand amperage, you first need to understand voltage. Voltage draws the energy into your device. Voltage that is too high is problematic because it can harm your device and can even cause it to short circuit. For most cellular devices, the typical voltage is listed at 5V. To give an example of voltage that is too high, the voltage on a laptop is about 20V.

Now, let’s get to the amperage. The easiest way to explain amperage is to say it is the speed at which the current runs through your device. For standard smartphones, you’ll see the amps listed on your device at 2.7A or 1A. For your device to get a reliable and effective charge, the amps listed on your charger must match the amount of amps needed by your device.

If you’re asking, “Can I use a power supply with lower amps?” the answer is no. If the power supply amperage is too low, then it won’t charge your device. On the flip side, you can use a power supply with greater amps because the device will only take what it needs.

To charge your phone at optimal levels, you ideally want to have the voltage match precisely and the amperage match or exceed the necessary amount. Any other combination will slow down your charging, not charge your mobile device at all, or potentially harm your device.
