Chances are that most people today have more than one portable device. It could be any combination of smartphones, laptops, iPads, Kindles, or similar electronic devices. Charging these gadgets and having them stay charged is always somewhat of an annoyance. But it’s a necessary part of being able to enjoy them.
Instead of using multiple outlets in different rooms around the home or office, consumers have learned to utilize USB hubs. For reasons of efficiency and effectiveness, USB hubs provide a better charging experience. But it’s important to note that not all USB hubs are the same. In fact, depending on your charging needs, some don’t work well at all. There are definitely some questions and considerations you need to keep in mind before buying any hub off the shelf.
Why USB Ports?
The reality of today is that most devices are now made to be versatile. So, in addition to the smartphones and iPads many of us carry around daily, you can add keyboards, printers, and memory cards to the list of devices that can be hooked up to USB ports.
And let’s assume you are working primarily from a laptop—some of the smaller devices can maintain a slow charge using the ports already attached to the laptop. But with consumers wanting slicker, more futuristic-looking laptops, the number of ports attached has dwindled. This news isn’t too negative as using your laptop as a charging hub is not the most effective means to begin with.
If, by chance, you are still using a desktop (let’s say for your home office) then you do have a few more USB ports to work with. And while a desktop may be okay for charging your personal phone, it doesn’t work well for any other device we’ve mentioned—and actually not that well for the phone either. Memory cards and a mouse are portable devices that a desktop can most readily handle without disrupting any of its primary functions.
USB Hubs
When talking about putting together a mini station for your devices, a hub is the way to go. A perfect USB hub splits the charging equally while still only using one outlet. That means all your devices can be in the area for efficiency and—assuming you use a suitable USB hub—your devices can expect to be adequately powered as well.
But quality does play a role here. Safety needs to be considered when purchasing a USB powered hub. Buying a cheaper brand means you get poorer quality. You may assume this doesn’t matter, but that would be a mistake. Bad wiring from knock-off brands can trigger fires or malfunctions. So, for what is a relatively small increase in spending, you can save yourself from having to replace the lower-value hub when it inevitably breaks down.
What’s also an important consideration is the model of the hub—try to go with the latest model. This ensures they are compatible with all of your devices and offer the best charge without any concern for slowing down or impacting any of the other devices that are connected to the hub.
