Why Doesn’t Your Cellphone USB Work Sometimes?

It’s happened to all of us at one point or another: your phone is dying, and you manage to get to your charger just in time to plug it in—only to find out that your charger isn’t working. It was working last night and the night before, so what’s the problem? You check the outlet, and it’s working, so it must be the charger. Could it be the USB port or the wall adapter? There is a wide array of reasons for your charger not being able to work properly, so chances are you’ll have to try troubleshooting a few things before you find the root cause. To learn all the things you should check when attempting to charge your iPhone or Android phone but it’s not working, keep on reading.

Charging Cables

Charging cables are often the most vulnerable part of any charger, because of the inevitable curling and twisting of the cord. While most cables are made to be flexible to survive the stress of being stretched and twisted, most of them will succumb to the wear and tear eventually, and break. Because of its susceptibility to damage, it’s one of the first things you should check if your phone won’t charge.

Wall Plug Adapter

Next, check to see if your wall plug adapter is working. If your charging cable isn’t the problem, then this is probably the culprit for your charging woes. Unplug your charging cable from the adapter and into another one. Plug that one into the outlet, and see if your phone begins to charge. If it does, then you’ve solved the mystery—if not, keep reading for the next thing you should check.

USB Port

Thirdly, check to see how clean your Android USB connection is. Lint can gather in this tiny area, so try blowing into it gently to clear any dust that might be inhibiting your device’s charging capabilities. Be sure not to poke anything into the port, since this could damage it—if blowing doesn’t help, then the port is likely clean and something else may be the cause.

Software Updates

If all else fails, check to see if your smartphone or tablet has any pending software updates that you’ve yet to install. You can usually find this out by visiting the “Settings” on your device. If you find there are pending updates, install them, restart your phone, and try charging it again.
